"While my sister was on stage killing it like a motherfucka / I was enraged, feelin’ it like a motherfucka / Bird in the cage, you would never know what I was dealing / We went our separate ways, but I was happy she was killing it / Bittersweet, she was up, I was down / No lie I feel good for her, but what do I do now? / Forget the records, off the record, I was going through some bullshit / Post-survivor, she on fire, who wanna hear my bullshit? / Meanwhile, this nigga putting his hands on me / Swear y’all don’t know the half of this industry."
The second and third verse take a turn for the worse (if it couldn't get any worse). She goes into detail about the abuse "he" put her through. It was so bad that he turned her against her family and her friends, including Beyonce. She sings, "He hit the window like it was me, until it shattered / He pulled me out and said “don’t nobody love you but me / Not yo mama, not your daddy and especially not Bey / He turned me against my sister, I missed ya."
What I love about this song and Kelly is, you can feel her emotion and its something real that has happened to her. The pain she experienced, you can feel it through this song. In an interview with Billboard on May 15th, 2013, Kelly told them that it was an emotional song that took her days to record. "I had to get past being so upset and actually sing the song, not sob through it," Kelly explained. The-Dream pushed Kelly to go outside of her comfort zone for this song. I'm glad he did because this is a part of Kelly many people didn't know existed. Her goal for this song is to inspire her fans, not bring them down. If you're in an abusive relationship, don't stay quiet. Speak out. It will only get worse. You're not alone and there are people to help you. Call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) if you are being abused! Woman or man!!
I'm glad we have positive artists like Kelly Rowland to speak out about their stories. In the words of Kelly,
"Love is pain and pain is love / You got me fucked up"
